Collection, 1799-1972 (bulk 1846-1905).

The bulk of the collection contains Wallace's correspondence with his wife and son; business and professional letters; letters to Wallace and his family; and photographs. Topics include Wallace's military and civil service careers during the Civil War, as governor of New Mexico Territory, and as Minister to Turkey; and his involvement in Mexico (1865-1867). Wallace's speeches, notes, and notebooks deal with his publishing and lecture work; business interests in Crawfordsville and Indianapolis, Ind.; and the 1876 presidential election. The papers of Wallace's wife, Susan Elston Wallace, contain family correspondence and letters to her son from Europe, Turkey, and Egypt; correspondence with her publishers; and biographical writings, scrapbooks, and clippings about her husband. The letterbooks of son Henry Lane Wallace relate to family business, and a lawsuit regarding the theatrical production of BEN-HUR. Also included are the papers of Isaac C. Elston regarding business interests and the development of Michigan City, Ind.; and genealogical materials for the Wallace, Elston, and Test families. Visual items in this collection include original drawings and sketches by Wallace as well as family portraits and photographs; photos of Wallace's home and studio; Civil War photos of generals and the 11th Indiana Infantry; and photos from Turkey and Italy.

Lewis "Lew" Wallace was born on April 10, 1827, in Brookville, Indiana. He was the second of four sons born to Esther French Wallace (née Test) and David Wallace. Isaac C. Elston, also known as "Major," was a store-keeper in Crawfordsville, Ind. in the 1820s. He became wealthy by land speculation, banking, and investment in railroads.
